This perfectly summarizes why I love the Simpsons and hate Family Guy.
I watched that episode with my family and I could just feel how uncomfortable everyone was. Honestly, it was a really jarring, unpleasant episode.
Homer is a terrible dad. So is Peter. But Homer’s saving grace has always been that he tries—he’s bad at it and he fucks it up a lot, but he loves his family and he wants to be better than he is.
One of my favorite Homer moments is in “Diatribe of a Mad Housewife.” Tl;dr Marge writes a steamy romance novel starring herself and Ned, and when Homer finds out, he chases down Ned and, rather than attack him, asks him to teach him how to be a better husband.
There’s some part of his stupid self that wants to do better.
I never got that impression with Peter. Instead, the family has gotten more and more abusive towards Meg. It’s really unsettling for me when I started realizing that’s what happens sometimes in abusive families. Abusers sometimes single out one child to abuse, and quite often the other family members take the abuser’s side. After all, it’s easier to side with an abuser than to run the risk of becoming the target yourself.
There’s never really a point where it seems like Peter cares at all that his shitty behavior impacts his family. It actually seems to have gotten worse over the years. He expects everyone to clean up his messes because that’s always what happens; there’s really no reason for him not to be shitty.
And it’s easy to see how Meg is affected. She doesn’t have much of a character, really, because so much her screen time is devoted to being abused. The bits of character development all seem to hinge on her being this sad, neglected person who’s trying her best but never really gets any help from anyone. Quite the opposite; there have been a lot of episodes where her family sabotages any attempts to be herself.
It can be easy to forget how awful this behavior is when the only context is the show itself (frankly, everyone on Family Guy is kind of terrible). Seeing it played against the Simpsons, who are a flawed and dysfunctional but ultimately loving family, was painful to watch.
"Good morning, Hong Kong."
On the 31st of August, the Standing Committee of National People’s Concgress released their proposition for Hong Kong’s 2016 and 2017 Political Reform. It essentially states that Hong Kong’s 2017 Chief Executive Election will institute a system called the Nomination Committee, who will choose two to three different candidates for popular vote. After popular election of one of the nominated candidates, the new Chief Executive “will have to be appointed by the Central People’s Government.”
Members of the Scholarism movement (a student-led Hong Kong activist group) planned for university and secondary school students to skip classes on the 22nd and 26th of September to protest on the streets. OCLP (Occupy Central with Love and Peace) also had a protests planned for the 1st of October, the national holiday celebrating the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, but the Scholarism protests led them to begin prematurely.
On the night of 26th of September, several hundred demonstrators managed to get into the courtyard of the Central Government Complex, who were immediately surrounded and blockaded by the Hong Kong Police Force. The HKPF refused to let protesters within the courtyard leave, use any bathrooms or receive any external aid such as medical care, food or water. This action had rallied student sympathizers across the city to attend the protests, greatly increasing the number of protesters. It also made OCLP announce that the protest would begin on the dawn 27th of September instead.
The demonstrators in the courtyard of the Central Government Complex were eventually removed sometime over the weekend, but the resultant stand-off between protesters and police forces continued elsewhere in Hong Kong. From Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and even Mong Kok. The tension would finally break when the police engaged protesters with riot shields, batons, pepper spray and tear gas.
What was supposed to be a nightlong protest ended up putting the city on hold over the weekend, with protesters continuing to stay on the streets on the morning of the 29th (don’t forget, Hong Kong’s timezone is GMT +0800).
The picture itself was submitted on Facebook by a news station in Hong Kong called Apple Daily.
In the books, Hermione’s boggart is failing her classes. Her greatest fear is failing her classes.
However, it goes a lot deeper than that. Subconsciously, I think she believes that if she does not do well and if she fails, they’ll kick her out of Hogwarts and the Wizarding World. So her real fear isn’t failing.
At Hogwarts, she has two wonderful friends who love her, and she is getting to live in an incredible world. She doesn’t want to lose that, and she thinks that if she does bad in her classes, they won’t let her come back.
so what if…
when in the philosophers stone her line “we could be killed, or worse.. expelled” wasn’t her being snooty or a teachers pet..
but her saying that she would rather die than stop going to hogwarts and never see her friends again?
I forgot to post this from my instagram, so I’m reposting it here. I fucked it up because I was on the train (notice the ‘r’ in rent), but I can rewrite it later. :) This is something I read that I want to remember because my heart constantly bleeds for everyone and I need to stop doing that.
Today was such a fail.
I got my $50 worth of film developed and was going to scan all of them tonight until I realized that all of my USB drives that I had/used for school are gone. I think I lost them, and one of them I actually dropped my laptop on it while still being plugged in, so the whole thing came out of the plastic. MEH.
I went crazy trying to find at least ONE that was usable, but I ended up just throwing away all my old shit that I found while looking for it. When I move again, I really need to purge all the shit I have.
I’m trying to be more minimalistic, but I’m also a packrat so that’s kind of proving to be hard. In other news, I’ve been doing more calligraphy on the train and I also bought a new brush pen, so more of that coming up soon. :)
